| Q. |
What is an IP Rating and what does it mean? |
| A. |
An International Protection Rating for equipment and enclosures (sometimes also interpreted as Ingress Protection Rating) is a two digit number (as specified in Australian Standards AS60529 and EN60529) and is used to provide an IP Rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclose for electronic equipment.
The two digits represent different forms of environmental influence:
- The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects
- The second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids
The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection from that influence. As an example, a product rated as IP57 would be better protected against environmental factors than another similar product that was only rated as IP43. Some devices are rated at IP67, making them totally protected against dust ingress and able to withstand immersion up to a depth of 1 metre. |
| Q. |
What is the difference between 2G (GSM), 3G, Next G and Yes G? |
| A. |
The 'G' stands for 'Generation', with the 1st generation network being the old analogue system, and the 2G (GSM), or 2nd generation network being the current digital network. Both of these systems run on various frequencies. You may also notice 2.5G and EDGE mentioned in a phone's specifications; these are technically still only 2G with a slight speed increase.
The difference between 2G and 3G (WCDMA, UMTS, HSPA) networks is really only an increase in speed, allowing new functionality such as video calls and faster downloads over-the-air. 3G operates on 2100MHz in Australia.
NextG (WCDMA, UMTS, HSPA) and YesG (WCDMA, UMTS, HSPA) are technically only 3.5G, with only minimal changes again and a speed boost as the major difference, allowing for the use of features such as live TV on your mobile phone. NextG only works on 850MHz, and YesG works on both 900MHz and 2100MHz. Both of these networks only exist in Australia (NextG is only available through Telstra, and YesG is only available through Optus). |
